Enslaved and formerly enslaved families were often excluded from the written record entirely. Oral history — passed through generations — frequently preserves names, relationships, and events found nowhere else.
Interviews are scheduled at the storyteller's pace, recorded with consent, and the interviewee reviews the written summary before anything is published. Sensitive family details are shared only with explicit permission.
An oral account is treated as strong evidence of lived experience and family memory. Where it touches a specific date or document, the team notes it as an oral tradition alongside — not a replacement for — the written record.
